"Memín Pinguín" is a lovable comic book character created in 1943 by Yolanda Vargas Dulche for a project called "Almas de Niño" (Children souls). The writer, who loved African-American children, gave birth to the character. The cartoon was designed by Alberto Cabrera. The first name, "Memín", came from Yolanda's boyfriend's nickname, and "Pinguín" is a very affectionate way to say mischievous ("travieso") in Spanish.
